The Weekend, Troubling News, & Educating the Next Generation

Before I get into the weekend recap, does it bother anyone else that Shirley Feeney from Laverne and Shirley got in trouble at her job with HP?

Tragic. But that sort of thing happens with a lot of 1970s TV stars. Here she is on the right from somewhat happier times. Perhaps during Battle of the Network Stars. Who can say?

Anyway, Steve and I stayed at The Venice Suites this weekend overlooking the beach in Venice, CA. We scored the stay when we renewed our subscription to KCRW, the local NPR affiliate.

The suites are actually furnished apartments and they're right on the boardwalk. We woke to the street performers and artists setting up shop and went to sleep to the sounds of the surf and a nearby jazz band. There were also super annoying marathon runners and a couple crazy people, but it is Venice and one does stay there for the culture, doesn't one?
It was a perfect weekend of rest that the two of us needed to recharge after all the work we've been doing.

During our stay we finally saw QuinceƱera which is about this Mexican girl in Echo Park and her outcast cousin who deal with some heavy crap. It's a truly wonderful film, though I know there's been some controversy surrounding the gay couple in it. Basically, they're the white gay guys who buy a house and are gentrifying the neighborhood-- sounds like Steve and me, right?
Well, not exactly. The thing that's got some knickers in a bunch is that the gay couple isn't necessarily considered a positive image for the community. They're in an open relationship, ya see, and some folks think the only images we put out there should be of gay people who act like, well, straight well behaved white men. That way, straight white men love us. Sweet!

Here's the thing. NOT ALL FAGS ARE GOOD PEOPLE! NOR DO THEY LIVE BY THE STRAIGHT WORLD'S STANDARDS! Sure, these characters may not represent Steve's and my (or our friends') relationships-- we only sleeping with each other-- but the fact is that some queer couples do play around. So do straight couples. Whatever. The point is that just like a film can show straight dicks, there can also be gay dicks (laugh, go on, you know you want to).

Now let's move on...
...to a really cut picture of my boyfriend on the beach! Sweet!

On Sunday, our friends Saydi and Eric came over with their little girl Hannah. Here she is eating cake-- apologies to Steve for having sleepy photo but it's the only one we had.

The two of us had so much fun watching Hannah explore our yard, call me "Ricket" and hear all the animal noises she had learned. Her parents also taught her how to do a mad scientist laugh, which is pure genius. I taught her how to sound like a ghetto bird, complete with waving her hand like a propeller over her head as she goes, "Whoop! Whoop! Whoop!"

Sing along with me everyone...."I believe the children are our future. Teach them well, and let them lead the way..."

Hmmm, I taught my lil' bro a mad scientist laugh...we'd bust in out whenever I drove him anywhere, I'd pretend to crash and say "BOOM" and we'd cackle maniacally...

We'd all make twisted parents, and you know it!

Love the "cut" pic of Steve :).

PS
Just cuz you're a straight white man doesn't mean you can't cut hair! There are hurdles to overcome, yes, but I'm not crying about my new 'do. And I laughed and laughed when I read your comment cuz, baby doll, I have no style, so it's all okay.

Don't gay people eat babies? Thats what I saw in a movie once.

It's funny Dominik would say that, because at the Ikea in LA they do have a giant poster of a gay couple in their Ikea home-- although the furniture at Venice Suites is mostly West Elm.... And to answer Adam, yes, gay people eat children and want to marry sheep after we hump all the straight men in the world.

HA!!!
I knew it, Shirly should have stayed at Shotz, but oh no, she had to leave the factory, in mid shift I might ad, get married and then head up HP.

She get's what she deserves!!

(Not really, I like her and only wish her well)

People get up in arms about negative gay portrayals? I never thought about that before.

I suppose there are some of those liberal cream puffs who get their feathers ruffled about that sort thing.

But lord knows I have met a few gay dicks in my time.

Jeez.
